Library Resources
Welcome to our Library
At Shirebrook Academy, our Library is at the ‘centre’ of our school – both physically, and within the hearts of our students. The Library fosters a deep sense of community, providing students with a welcoming space to not only read, but also to work and exercise their creativity.
Reading is central to our curriculum, and the Library supports in this with its vast array of fiction and non-fiction books as well as providing computers that can be used at break, lunchtimes and after school for research and homework.
The Library is also a key part in celebrating and commemorating key events throughout the school calendar, putting on events and curating sets of books to allow students to explore areas of their learning in a fun and research-driven way.
Every KS3 student visits the Library half-termly with their reading class and this is an invaluable opportunity not only for them to choose a reading book, but also to engage with the space, explore different genres, and gain recommendations from the Librarian. Library visits support our students in choosing books linked to their interests, with guidance regarding their reading level and what would be suitable and appropriate. Our stock is constantly evolving and growing to meet the needs and interests of our students with our incredible Student Librarians having a direct hand in the book selection process.
The Library offers a comprehensive set of extra-curricular activities at both lunchtimes and on a Monday after school, creating a calm and inviting space for students to develop their creativity as well as work on academic endeavours.
We run a wide variety of special events, such as our half-termly Poetry Slams, our legendary World Book Day scavenger hunt as well as Readathons and competitions throughout the year.
Our Library is so much more than just a room in a school - it is a community where every student is a reader and where every student is welcome and encouraged to explore new worlds, discover new vocabulary and develop their reading and interests in a safe and supportive environment.
Borrowing
Students are allowed to borrow up to 2 items at a time and these can be fiction or non-fiction. Most books are available for a 3-week loan period. Items can be renewed if you have not yet finished with them and need to have them for a longer period. We do not charge fines for overdue items, however a bill for the replacement cost of very overdue or damaged items may be sent home at the end of term if loans are still outstanding. If you have any queries, please contact the Librarian.
